The town of Newton is the county seat for Sussex County in the New York metropolitan area. As of the 2000 census, it is home to 8,244 residents.
Education
Newton is served by the Newton Public School District, which has 3 schools for 1,700 students. Within 40 miles of the town, there are 59 colleges, universities and vocational schools. Among the many schools are NCAA Division I school, Seton Hall University in Essex County, Rutgers University, Drew University in Morris County, and the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York County. Graduate schools include New York Law School and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey among others.
Community Events
The town of Newton hosts several events throughout the year, including the Newton Day Festival every summer with all sorts of vendors and organizations celebrating the culture and history of the town. Other events include a St. Patrick's Day Parade, a holiday parade in the winter, summer sidewalk sales, and the Taste of Newton, an annual autumn evening event sharing locally grown foods served at local restaurants.
Recreation
Newton is home to the Swartswood State Park, which is full of wildlife above ground and in the water. The park is open year-round and offers a variety of recreational activities which vary with the seasons. From Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, certified lifeguards are on duty for swimming safety. During the summer, many colorful sailboats can be seen floating along the water. Secluded picnic areas can be found throughout the park, each site with its own grill. Camping is open year-round with 65 tent and trailer sties, each with a fire ring, picnic table and lantern holder. The rate is an affordable $15 per night, equipped with flushing toilets, showers and laundry facilities. The park also offers 4 trails, each with various degrees of difficulty for walking, cycling, roller blading or skate boarding. Fishing and hunting is also available at the park.
